Biography

Patrick Chapman is Grainger Associate and Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA.  He is a co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of SmartSpark Energy Systems, Inc. of Champaign, Illinois.  He received a Ph.D. from Purdue University in 2000, and the Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1996 and 1997, respectively. 

Prof. Chapman is a Senior Member of the IEEE, an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, and serving as a Member-at-Large and Historian for the IEEE Power Electronics Society Administrative Committee.  He has received the National Science Foundation Early Career Award and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award.  He was named a “significant reviewer” by the IEEE Power Engineering Society, and the 2006 Richard M. Bass Outstanding Young Power Electronics Engineer. 

His research interests within power electronics include integrated circuit and passive component design, electric drives, automated modeling of magnetic devices, hybrid energy systems, and energy harvesting.  On these subjects, he has published about two-dozen journal papers, more than forty conference papers, one book chapter, and two patents. 

Current and Upcoming Projects

Working on new textbook, "Electromechanics: the science and engineering of electric forces and motion," as a co-author to Philip Krein.  Look for it in 2008.  This book will have a website as it progresses.  Let me know if you're interested in reading a summary.
